About : Ampyx Power is developing an Airborne Wind Energy (AWE) system using a tethered aircraft that flies like a kite. Fifty highly skilled professionals with more than 20 nationalities are working from The Hague, Netherlands and Melbourne, Australia on a Dutch innovation that uses the more constant and powerful winds above 200 m. The system fits in containers and requires much less material to construct, smaller foundation, and infrastructure than conventional technologies. With AWE innovation, new locations for wind energy can be unlocked (incl. floating offshore, rural onshore). Energy is harvested efficiently, reducing materials, foundations and carbon footprint, while lower visual and noise impact can ease public acceptance.
Vision : Our vision is to create innovative, elegant technology to harvest untapped energy sources for a sustainable future and our mission is to expand the sustainable energy supply with airborne wind innovation.
The Technology : The objective of the Airborne Wind Energy System is to capture the vast wind resource at higher altitudes with much less material than used in conventional wind turbines. The automatic aircraft is tethered to a generator on the ground. It moves in a regular cross wind pattern at an altitude from 200 m up to 450 m. When the aircraft moves, it pulls the tether which drives the generator. Once the tether is reeled out to a predefined tether length of about 750 m, the aircraft automatically returns towards a lower altitude causing the tether to reel in. Then it ascends and repeats the process. The aircraft lands and takes off automatically from a platform, by utilizing an array of sensors which provide the autopilot with critical information to perform the task safely.

Through the Climate Alliance, more than 1,700 member municipalities and districts covering 26 European countries as well as a variety of regional governments, NGOs and other organisations are actively working to combat climate change. In terms of members, Climate Alliance is the largest European city network dedicated to climate action. Our members, ranging from small rural towns to cities with populations in the millions, who all accept climate change as a global challenge that requires local solutions.
This fact is demonstrated in Climate Alliance’s long tradition of promoting climate action both in European municipalities and with the indigenous peoples of the Amazon River basin, where local peoples have been practicing sustainable forestry for millennia. Equipped with an intimate knowledge of their environment and a direct connection to realities on the ground, they are, much like local governments the world over, best positioned to put climate action into practice within their territories. For European municipalities, such action typically comes in the form of initiatives for renewable energies, energy efficiency or energy conservation. For indigenous communities, climate action typically revolves around safeguarding their forests and territorial rights. We at Climate Alliance thus pair an emphasis on ambitious municipal action in Europe with support for stewardship of the rainforests by the indigenous peoples who call it home.

Coopérnico is a Portuguese renewable energy cooperative that combines its sustainability oriented and social nature with the support of solidarity, education and environmental protection projects. Coopérnico's mission is to engage citizens and companies in the creation of a new energetic, economic and social paradigm that benefits both society and the environment: renewable, efficient, fair and decentralized. Coopérnico has 3 main activity areas: renewable energy production, energy efficiency and commercialization (retail). Currently, Coopérnico has over 1480 members who have already invested in a total of seventeen RES projects, up to 1,54MWp (so far). All of these projects create environmental, economic and social value – the first for obvious reasons, the second because they are profitable projects and members get a reasonable return on investment and the latter through direct collaboration with educational or social economic organizations – and represent a rupture with the traditional models used for the promotion of RES projects in Portugal. From May 2015, Coopérnico has started to commercialize green electricity, becoming also the first cooperative to do it in Portugal. With this process – called the green energy revolution by the cooperative members - the cooperative invites everyone to engage in the creation of a more sustainable future by using green electricity in their houses or companies

Already 4 billion people face water scarcity today. Especially islands are at the forefront of climate change and often lack natural water resources. The key for islands to moving from scarcity to abundance lies in the sea. Traditional desalination technology, unfortunately, uses a great deal of fossil energy and is a nightmare to maintain. Not anymore:
Elemental Water Makers provides efficient and easy reverse osmosis technology that can be powered by sustainable energy.
Our efficient and sustainable solar desalination technology turns seawater into clean water using only the unlimited resources of the sea and sun in already over 12 countries.
Elemental Water Makers provides sustainable desalination solutions for municipalities, communities, resorts, private properties & industries on islands and coastal regions. Our projects result on average in a reduction of water expenses >50%, while switching from fossil energy to renewable energy. Reliability goes hand-in-hand with savings, while ease of (remote) operation, a minimum of maintenance and high water-quality/supply are assured. In 2017, we received the MBR Global Water Award 1st prize from the Emir of Dubai for our technology, selected out of 138 organizations and we have been labeled as Efficient Solution by the Solar Impulse Foundation in 2019.
Please join us in solving freshwater scarcity, using only the elements sea, sun, earth & wind.

Supported by Interreg VA France (Channel) England, the Intelligent Community Energy (ICE) project aims to facilitate the design and the implementation of innovative smart energy solutions for isolated territories of the Channel area that face unique energy challenges.
Many islands have no connection to wider electricity distribution systems and are dependent on imported energy supplies, typically fossil fuel driven. The energy systems that isolated communities depend on tend to be less reliable, more expensive and produce more greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions than mainland grid systems.
In response to these problems, the ICE project considers the entire energy cycle, from production to consumption, and integrates new and established technologies in order to deliver innovative energy system solutions. These solutions will be implemented and tested at our unique pilot demonstration sites (Ushant island and the University of East Anglia’s campus), to demonstrate their feasibility and to develop a general model for isolated smart energy systems elsewhere.
The ICE consortium brings together research and business support organisations in France and the United Kingdom; and commitment from SMEs will support the project rollout and promote European cooperation.

The Interdisciplinary Lab on Climate Change of the University of the Balearic Islands is a hub of researchers from many different disciplines that work on climate change: physics, biology, engineering, chemistry, economy, law, mathematics and computing, education and philosophy.
The main aims of the LINCC are:
The de-centralization of electricity generation requires equally de-centralized and affordable solutions to integrate more RES, increase the security of supply and decarbonize the EU energy future. The combination and unique integration of de-centralized storage with technologies for local energy system optimization, including demand response, electric vehicle charging optimization and synergies with other energy vectors at the local level, can offer a cost-efficient pathway (in comparison to high-CAPEX grid upgrade investments) for local energy systems optimization in presence of high volumes of volatile and intermittent RES, since huge amounts of currently nonutilized flexibility can be unleashed to ensure optimal congestion management and effective tackling of local instabilities and imbalances. MERLON introduces an Integrated Modular Local Energy Management Framework for the Holistic Operational Optimization of Local Energy Systems in presence of high shares of volatile distributed RES.
Optimization in MERLON applies to multiple levels spanning optimal coordination of local generation, with demand and storage flexibility, as well as flexibility offered by EVs and CHP Plants to facilitate maximum RES integration, avoidance of curtailment and satisfaction of balancing/ ancillary grid needs. MERLON will enable the realization of novel business models, allowing local energy communities to introduce themselves in local flexibility markets, while paving the way for the realization of novel Microgrid-as-a-Service models, assigning to local DSOs the role of “Aggregator of Aggregators” for the provision of added value services to the overlay distribution grid. It equips local stakeholders (DSOs, energy cooperatives, prosumers) with innovative and highly effective tools for the establishment of robust business practices to exploit their microgrids and dynamic VPPs as balancing and ancillary assets toward grid stability and alleviation of network constraints.
TRESOIL BIOFUELS SRL: will build or refit a specialized autonomous vessel with Waste to Hydrogen (PHEW2H2 DMG®)) on-board energy production technology to rid the Canary Islands of unrecyclable plastic and other waste wherever it accumulates around each island port of the Canarias. The autonomous vessel will travel to wherever large amounts of plastic and end of life tires accumulate, and be instantly converted without emission into electricity or high grade hydrogen; to be stored and used as a fuel for tri-generation power for the islands own use or to be exported. The green hydrogen (H2) production vessel while emitting zero emission will power itself; using the latest hydrogen fuel cell system, to fuel its own electric propulsion engine. The plastic and tires will be used as (RDF) feedstock to produce hydrogen and electricity from the PHEW2H2DMG®(CHP)-Ultra Heat Temperature (UHT) gasification onboard power plant. PHEW2H2DMG® reactor will produce 99.9 % pure hydrogen and electricity at sea or at port. The ship will be at sea almost all year round as it produces its own H2 fuel on a continuous basis and does not have to refuel portside. Hydrogen propulsion technology already exists for ocean-going ships; it is a zero polluting fuel as a better alternative to heavy bunker fuel. gen propulsion technology already exists for ocean-going ships; it is a zero polluting fuel as a better alternative to heavy bunker fuel.
Oceans United has the unique ability to bring cleanup efforts to remote maritime areas of the world because we include recycling technology onboard our vessels. The built-up masses of waste debris can now be effectively and efficiently addressed to help restore the health and beauty of these areas to take environmental pressure off their vital ecosystems. In addition, Island governments are increasingly recognizing that our technology can be used to help permanently solve their local waste management problems with a land-based version of our P2F recycling system for a comprehensive solution.
The ability of local governments to provide a new viable waste management solution to this legacy problem changes the whole economics of these communities. In addition, it now allows for economic incentives to be paid to anyone for the collection and return of plastic waste. This could aid millions of the poorest people in the world while permanently changing the mindset and behaviour toward waste management.

Islands are the ideal testbed for identifying, testing and introducing energy innovations. Island communities are resilient by nature therefore more inclined towards introducing systems and solutions that help to protect their community and increase their self-reliance. Clean energy-based microgrids are a way for islands to create a cleaner living environment, reduce dependence on fossil-based fuels and supply chains and reduce the overall cost of energy. Energy storage is the Holy Grail in the Energy Transition and the smaller the grid, the more impactful the introduction of intermitten renewable energy sources is. Storage will be required to (time) shift the load or the generation to balance supply and demand on the grid. Peak power surges need to be shaved and power dips need to be filled. Moreover, as diesel-based powergeneration is taken out, the grid needs an alternative source of inertia and frequency control. It is therefore that we are honored to be part of the Clean Energy for EU Islands Community as QuinteQ is introducing the world's most advanced flywheel energy storage technology. With standby losses of 0.1%/hr, C-rates of 10-20, over 350.000 cycles and a cycle cost of EUR 0,03/kWh, we believe we can offer island communities a very valuable addition to optimize the island microgrid. QuinteQ can stack functions like multi-MW energy storage, peak shaving, voltage control and natural inertia with one single solution, plug and play..

ReSEL expertise focuses on Sustainable Energy Systems-Policy and Planning; Renewable Energy and Energy Saving Systems; Sustainable Cities and Communities mostly on Mediterranean insular cases. Its main objectives are to turn research and scientific knowledge to mature energy solutions and practices that are economically and technically sound and to support the island and the State to achieve the 2030 and 2050 targets. Its staff is creating synergies engaging the proper market actors, local/regional authorities, governmental organizations, chambers, professional associations, the energy/RES/EE sector, NGOs, and media representatives. The last years has established cooperation with UNWTO (UN World Tourism Organization) and RMEI (Réseau Méditerranéen des Ecoles d'Ingénieurs et de Management). Also participates in regional innovation initiatives (i.e. Cretan Innovation Pole, Innovation Committee of Crete, etc.).
ReSEL has a strong orientation towards capacity building activities for policy/market actors, trainers, technical staff and public authorities, and towards transferability. It has developed expertise in managing EU-funded projects Horizon 2020, Intelligent Energy-Europe, Interreg MED, COST, Erasmus, LEONARDO, FP7, FP6, SAVE, THERMIE, etc.), structural funds (3rd CSF, NSRF 2007-2013, NSRF 2014-2020) and other national contracts, more than 40 as coordinators, 80+ as participating experts.
The NGO Small Islands Organisation (SMILO) supports small islands of less than 150km² towards the sustainable management of their territory and resources. It bolsters integrated operations for the preservation of islands’ natural resources, in relation to water and sanitation, waste, energy, biodiversity, landscapes and heritage issues. The Sustainable Island label rewards the positive local dynamics and sustainable practices. Currently, 18 islands are involved in the labelling process. SMILO provides further support with the Islands Fund, which finances concrete and sustainable operations on the ground. To strengthen cooperation and solidarity between islands, the NGO coordinates an international network, with members from West Africa, the Indian Ocean, Southeast Asia, Europe and the Mediterranean.
New Energy Coalition is a network and knowledge coalition that is committed to a smart and successful transition to the sustainable energy system of the future, in the Netherlands and the rest of the world. The foundation is a triple-helix organization funded by public and private parties as well as knowledge institutions. The organization was created in 2017 when three renowned energy institutes merged: Energy Academy Europe, Energy Valley and Energy Delta Institute. This created a comprehensive coalition of knowledge and educational institutions, leading companies and governments.

We provide ESG centred corporate finance advice in funding and executing energy saving and green energy generation solutions, on an “as a service basis”. Energy transition, to scale and speed, will only happen if private finance, will engage, as it did throughout the ages.
We are a privately held tradition values partnership driven by working partners, who pride themselves in providing intellectual excellence on a “clientes” (Latin for “protection of those in your trust”) based engagement formula. Our multilingual staff, with a deep know-how base supports our clients succeed in their endeavours.
Islands Laboratory at UCL is a hub of researchers from different disciplines (mathematics, computer science, law, economics, environment, anthropology, engineering, architecture) who merge their powers to deliver cutting edge research, with he aim to understand essential connections between energy resource nexus, the environment, economy and society and how to research them. To achieve important global goals, such as those embodied in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), related to wellbeing, health, economic development, equity, we will simultaneously need better management and governance of natural resources everywhere.
Islands Laboratory have the following objectives:
WES is manufacturing small wind energy systems which IP rights were purchased from the original Lagerwey LW wind turbine technologies in 2004 at that time the technologies were installed mainly for farmers in the Netherlands, WES replaced the control system and power conversion with modern, remote-monitored technology and continued to develop, support and sell this successful wind turbine on five continents under the name WES.
The turbine’s typical two-bladed rotor has a unique hinged system and a passive blade angle adjustment. This unique, robust mechanism guarantees a high efficiency and requires only simple and minimal maintenance.
The WES wind turbine has proven itself a durable, reliable high-performance solution. The first turbines have been operational since 1983, are still going strong and continue to generate energy for their owners. Since the familiar box shaped blue nacelle of the WES turbine was designed in the early 1980s, over 1000 units of the turbine have been installed around the world in agricultural locations, universities, on islands, in small communities and at coastal and mountainous sites.
It is the goal of Wind Energy Solutions to remain the global market leader in the growing market for midsize wind turbines.
