With a vision to establish a renewable energy-centered island, the initiative aims to interconnect grids spanning Sweden, Latvia, Finland, and Estonia, mirroring the model observed in Bornholm, located in the southern Baltic Sea.
At the heart of this ambitious project lies the commitment to offshore wind energy, envisioned as a catalyst for consistent green electricity generation. By harnessing the potential of offshore wind, the region aims to attract energy-intensive investments, swiftly evolving into a demonstration site for technologies. Notably, renewable energy production is expected to surpass local consumption levels, underscoring the region's potential as a net exporter of clean energy.
The strategic alignment of Saaremaa and Ruhnu Islands with the objectives of the Clean energy for EU islands secretariat’s 30 for 2030 Call further underlines their pivotal role in driving forward the renewable energy agenda. This initiative, spearheaded by the EU islands secretariat, aims to empower 30 islands and island groups across Europe to achieve complete energy independence through 100% renewable sources by 2030.
With the backing of the EU islands secretariat, Saaremaa and Ruhnu Islands are embarking on a transformative journey towards energy independence. The secretariat stands ready to provide technical and organisational support, guiding these islands through the formulation and execution of robust decarbonisation plans to achieve the islands’ goals.
